Clear Dangers Present this Memorial Day Weekend
|Lifeguards and First Responders are on high alert this Memorial Day Weekend following a number of drowning and shark attack incidents.
In Melbourne Beach, Florida a swimmer went missing late Sunday afternoon. The incident, believed to be caused by strong rip currents, took place at the Spessand Holland Park area of Melbourne Beach.
On the West Coast, two people drowned in the Sacramento, California area Mokelume River. The fact that the victims were not wearing life vests is believed to be a contributing factor to the deaths.
Near drownings on creeks and rivers in Baltimore, Maryland and Oklahoma also demonstrate the risk associated with early season bathers unaware of potential life threatening water dangers this time of year.
Shark attacks in Neptune Beach, Florida and Southern California this Memorial Day Weekend, heightened Lifeguard’s awareness of potentially hazardous marine life. In the latter, a Corona Del Mar State Beach lifeguard boat observed the woman in distress, who was found to have a large bite mark and heavy bleeding.
Lifeguards are determined more than ever this holiday weekend to make sure that beach-goers “Mind the Rip” and be aware of marine life dangers.╚
