Better safe than sorry – lifeguards required to watch over Rio’s star swimmers
With the 2016 Summer Olympics beginning to heat up, Lifeguard News has the scoop on swimmers and lifeguards contributing to the festivities! Better safe than sorry — lifeguards are required to watch over Rio’s star swimmers. A Rio de Janiero law passed in 2001 requires that every swimming pool has lifeguard supervision. This includes the Olympic Aquatic Stadium in Rio, where big-name swimmers are competing. The eight days of competition got its start on Saturday. While lifeguards say the job may seem boring at times, it’s worth getting to meet all the star athletes.
In Brazil, ‘Baywatch’ lifeguard detained at the Rio airport
Also in Rio de Janiero, Los Angeles lifeguard Azad Al-Barazi was held at a Rio airport for three hours on Wednesday because officials refused to believe he was an Olympic swimmer.
The dual citizen was travelling to compete for Syria in the 100 meter breaststroke. He arrived at Rio’s Galeao airport on Saturday but had a tough battle with immigration and Olympic personnel. It took some convincing, and Al-Barazi called the whole process “frustrating,” but he is now ready to represent his country in the Olympics.╚
