Sandals Lifeguard Receives Commonwealth Honor
Zacheus Dominique, a lifeguard and aqua center employee at Sandals Regency La Toc Golf Resort & Spa, St Lucia, recently earned the Commonwealth Mountbatten Medal on Tuesday October 18, 2016 for his heroics at the La Toc beach on Monday February 23, 2015, when he rescued a local resident from drowning and several others from the harsh conditions of the rough seas, through his vigilance and persistence.
The Mountbatten Medal is an annual award for the most gallant rescue or rescue attempt carried out in the previous calendar year. While the rescue attempt or rescue can be carried out anywhere in the world, the Mountbatten Medal will be awarded only to citizens of Commonwealth nations.
The medal which is second only to the global grouping’s lifetime achievement honors would be presented to Dominique at the Buckingham Palace in November with Sandals Resorts International promising to cater for all Dominique’s travel expenses to receive this honor in person.
Dominique who was just recently honored by the Sandals La Toc during a small ceremony at the resort is also a member of the St Lucia Life Saving Society – an affiliate of the Commonwealth Royal Life Saving Society.
Lifeguards Save Two People Off La Jolla Coast
Sometime around 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016, the weekend took a busy turn for lifeguards as they had to rescue two people off the coast of La Jolla. When two people about 200 yards offshore near Marine Street waved for help, the lifeguards knew exactly what they needed to do –dive and rescue. Reports say one of the victims had been on a surfboard while the other was on a boogie board but neither was injured during the incident.
Auckland Off-Duty Lifeguard Saves Drowning Dog
An off-duty lifeguard, Zane Rademaker put his skills to good use when he rescued a dog from the Bethells Beach Surf (which according to him was his first sea-based animal rescue). While on training drill Rademaker spotted a family trying to cross an estuary with their three dogs when a wave swept over and dragged their pit bull with it. The 24-year-old senior lifeguard sprang into action, plucking the dog from the surf then checked its vitals. Rademaker and the dog’s owner started CPR on the dog as it didn’t have a pulse. The dog was later taken to the vet for thorough examination
