Why Are Cruise Ship Lifeguards Good For Everyone?

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has just announced that it will be the second major cruise line to employ lifeguards aboard ship. Disney Cruise Line was the first major cruise line adding lifeguards back in 2013.

This change comes to the cruise line industry after much call from passengers seeking safe swimming environments. The cruise industry has had a series of drowning and near drowning occurrences on various ships in recent years. This culminated with a tragic near drowning, in which the 8 year old boy later died, aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last July.

The adding of lifeguards to cruise ships is a very positive win win for all involved. Passengers will be able to enjoy themselves knowing that their safety in the water is a higher priority than in the past. Lifeguards will be in more demand in the lifeguard industry thus raising wages and benefits. A possible negative of this however could be a worsening lifeguard shortage, a problem that has become increasingly difficult for aquatic facilities in recent years. Cruise lines will benefit greatly from better customer service and public perception from prioritizing passenger safety. They will also potentially be less subject to expensive and time consuming lawsuits from inured or deceased passenger families.

ShipAs you can see, the cruise line industry’s recent trend toward adding lifeguards to cruise ships is an overall major step in the right direction for passengers, lifeguards, and the cruise lines themselves.
