Havoc Created by Sharks Off Space Coast Beaches

Sharks have made their presence known this week off Florida’s Space Coast causing concern for lifeguards and beachgoers.  On Sunday, lifeguards at the Cocoa Beach Pier and nearby Shepard Park closed the beaches as a consequence of large shark sightings just off shore.  Shark sightings are common this time of year due to shark migration.  Yesterday a 10 year old girl suffered a calf laceration believed to be from a shark bite.  Also, a young woman reported a shark bite to her hand.  Both incidences occurred off nearby Melbourne Beach, Brevard County, Florida.  Swimmers often confuse sightings of sharks and dolphins. American Lifeguard Association National Spokesperson Wyatt Werneth says that you can tell a shark from a dolphin because they present a dorsal fin and tail fin and the tail will go side to side where a dolphin, in contrast, presents one dorsal fin and goes up and down.
