Memorial Day Weekend is the ceremonial opening of many aquatic facilities and beaches nationwide for the summer season.  Here are some recommendations from lifeguards on how to keep you and your family safe.

1. Swim Near A Lifeguard – Lifeguards are trained to know when you are getting into trouble before you do.  Also they are prepared to get you the help you need should trouble arise.  Your chances of drowning on a lifeguarded beach are 1 in 18 million.
2. Swim with a buddy and designate a water watcher – Having someone looking out for your safety while in the water is a major factor in preventing accidents and dealing with them should they occur.  Practice your rapid response plan with friends and family as to how to react should a hazardous or life threatening situation arise.
3. Be prepared – Take a clue from the Boy Scouts and come prepared.  Make sure your day pack has sunscreen, water, nutritious snacks, basic first aid supplies, and a Cell Phone to call for help if needed.
4. Cover up – The sun’s damaging rays can do a lot of damage to the largest of the body’s organs – the skin.  It is imperative that you always protect your skin in any and every way you can.  Proper sunscreen is a given but take sun protection a step further and wear a hat, sunglasses, and even a rash shirt to cover your chest, back and arms. Years from now you will be glad you did.
5. Hydrate – Staying hydrated with plenty of fluids is essential to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion.  Remember some beverages like sodas and alcohol actually contribute to dehydration, so stick with water and natural electrolytes like coconut water.
