Lifeguards are the Heroes We Need

Lifeguards are extremely important to everyone and their contributions to the society cannot be overemphasized. The past few weeks have been eventful for lifeguards across the globe, continuing in their strides of making sure everyone is safe and fine, even at the danger of losing their lives.
Lifeguards and their families sacrifice practically everything to make sure that no one loses their life under their watch. Below are some of the many milestones achieved by lifeguards or lifesavers as they are otherwise called.

Lifeguards carry out 24 rescues in 48 hours at Mount Maunganui beach
It was another busy day for lifeguards at Mount Maunganui and Papamoa, as they made 24 rescues in less than 48 days, with long weekend swimmers facing towering 3m waves. The two-day event that occurred between the 26th and 29th January led to more rescues for Mount Maunganui than what has been recorded in the past six months.

Off-duty lifeguard saves Young beach-goer
James Cervi, an off-duty lifeguard was at hand to save a young beach-goer from being smashed on rocks at Noosa. James literally plunged into cyclonic seas to save the beach-goer in what has been described by many as the most dramatic of 100 rescues recorded in the couple of days between February 18 and 20. The huge number of rescue activities can be attributed to the massive waves generated by passing Cyclone Gita.

Two Whanganui swimmers saved by two surf lifeguard
Two lucky swimmers trapped on a slippery cliff ledge at the Kai Iwi Beach in Whanganui narrowly escaped death after being rescued by two surf lifeguard rescue teams on Sunday, February 18. Report has it that the pair consisted of a father and daughter, and were caught up in rip and subsequently swept south.
“With the help of the police, firefighters and two rescue choppers, the swimmers were able to get onto a ledge but it was slippery and they were trapped in high seas at a high tide,” says Whanganui’s Surf Lifesaving Club supervisor Phil Gilmore.
The past few weeks have been eventful for lifeguards, with several rescues carried out and reiterating the importance of this special kind of people to everyone. While lifeguards are not necessarily given the respect and prestige they deserve particularly from ordinary citizens who have never been faced with the risk of losing a part of their body or their life before being saved by a brave lifeguard.
